A brand-new feature on bobthewriter.com — the Friday Five, a list of five things to see, do, read, listen to or watch this weekend. So without further ado:
READ (1): The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan. Riordan continues the adventures of Percy Jackson, only this time the kid gets a chance to see what it’s like to be a child of the Roman gods. Riordan’s got a great sense of fun adventure that appeals to teens and adults alike, and he’s done enough research into classical mythology that you’ll find yourself trying to figure out which myth he’s going to spin next.
DO (2): If the cool temperatures hold, why not cook a batch of Beer Chili? Nothing is quite so satisfying on a cold night as a good bowl or three of chili. And if your boyfriend/girlfriend is the playful type, you can look forward to playing a tense game of turtle — or dutch oven, if you’re really cruel — later.
WATCH (3): College football, duh. There are some great matchups this weekend, including Texas-Oklahoma State, Florida-Cow College, Alabama-Ole Miss. The season is half over, and most teams are in the thick of their conference games right now. I live in Tuscaloosa (home of the University of Alabama), and college football here is no less a religion than anything that happens under a church roof on Sundays. Bonus: There are a ton of road conference games on the schedule this weekend, so you’re likely to see a significant upset or three. Roll Tide!
SEE (4): The foliage is turning, and that means it’s a prime time to break out those hiking boots that have been moldering in your closet. Take a hike. No, I mean literally. Pack up a small backpack with some snacks, water, and a compass and hit the trail. If you can’t hike, at least take a walk and enjoy being outdoors before old man winter kicks you back inside for a few months.
LISTEN (5): Sexy and I Know It by LMFAO, which is at No. 4 on the Billboard 100, up from No. 6 last week. I wouldn’t even know who these guys are if it wasn’t for my wife, but I have to admit their music is really catchy and playful. Definitely a good way to keep any Fall blues away. When I hear these guys, I can’t help but smile. Yes, I’m a dork.
That’s my the first edition of the Friday Five. See you guys Monday, when we’ll find out whether Batman and Robin can escape the Giant Clam. Same Bat-time, same Bat-channel.
