Scribbles

I was talking about the manuscript with some friends last night, explaining an unexpected development. There’s a point in a manuscript — okay, a good manuscript — when the characters become nearly three-dimensional in the writer’s mind: when they act and talk in ways you hadn’t quite envisioned.

That’s happened to me a couple of times in this manuscript, and it’s surprised me nearly out of my skin every time. I’ve never been into writing intricately plotted novels. I’m much more of a these-are-interesting-characters-let’s-put-them-in-an-interesting situation-and-see-what-develops kind of writer.

A friend, Jesse, asked me if I saw this character in an ongoing series. I just don’t think that’s possible with this set-up. I like the main character fine, but I’m not sure I could see revisiting this cast of characters time after time.
